My Favorite Conchords Musical Numbers

Hey I hadn't been to the Apiary in way too long. I missed out on their interview with Rhys Darby about his work on (the best show on TV this summer!) Flight of the Conchords. He plays Murray, pretty much the best part of the show other than Brett and Jemain themselves.

As a result of this interview (and it's imbedded video) I decided to list my top 3 songs from the show so far.

Seinfeld's Children Where Platinum Diapers

Jerry Seinfeld is playing a show at the Hammerstein Ballroom this fall. Isn't that exciting? Yes, is the answer. The fact that he is playing such a high profile show in New York suggests that the new material he's been working on for the last few years has reached a point beyond tiny surprise shows at clubs. I was ready to buy tickets. I had my debit card out. Then I saw that the cheap seats were going for the bargain price of $100!!!!!?!?!?!!! GET OUT!

I'll wait for the HBO special Jerry.

The Greatest Millitary Movie of All Time

I'm slipping in my old age. Apparently last night on Pier 54* they held a public screening of the greatest military movie ever. That's right they played Stripes. I suppose I can't be too mad I missed out. A few weeks ago Stripes appeared on one of my HD channels and I watched it about 8 times in a week and half.

For those who don't know Stripes was a Bill Murray vehicle and might be the funniest performance of his career. Not to be confused with his best performances (Lost in Translation, Rushmore) or his funniest movie (Caddyshack). Stripes is Bill Murray playing "Bill Murray" to the nines. It also features excellent turns from John Candy and Harold Ramis. If you've never seen this gem well then I feel bad that you missed this screening. Get the DVD ASAP!

UCB in Central Park

This year's UCB in Central Park lineup lacks the star wattage of the last two years. In year one it was an ASSCAT in Central Park featuring the original UCB four as well as Horatio Sanz, Rob Riggle, Rob Heubel, and several others. The next year they out did themselves with appearances from Todd Barry(the night's stand out), three of four UCB originals, Aziz Ansari, Paul Scheer and others. This year however the emphasis is on UCB's more specialized items. This however is probably not such a bad deal.

On tap for this Thursday at 7:30 is a diverse and wonderful lineup. Slovin and Allen, Rebecca Drysdale and Reggie Watts are all acts I can give the stamp of approval. On top of that I've heard wonderful things about Stickerbook. Not good enough? Fine it's hosted by Rob Riggle and Horatio Sanz and Demetri Martin is at the top of the bill. Are you Happy? I am.

Before Andy Barker PI Conan O'Brien Wrote Lookwell!

Tonight is the "premiere" of Andy Barker PI, a new show created by Conan O'Brien and starring Andy Richter. (I say "premiere" because the damn things entire 6 episode run is available legally on NBC's website, iTunes, and YouTube. I have decided to save the thrill of watching it early and instead enjoy it on my family's wonderful HDTV.) All signs seem promissing tha the show will be a wonderfully funny and inventive addition to the NBC comedy line up.

It is strange however that Conan O'Brien's other foray into sitcom making would share so many of the same talking points of Andy Barker PI. That show was called Lookwell! and is one of the great never picked up pilots of all time. If you've never seen it here it is, in it's entirety.

Been writting a bunch about Conan, or at least related to Conan recently must be somethign in the air.

Adendum To Conan's Job Post

Could the world have caught up with talk show visionary Zach Galifianakis' brilliant LAte World with Zach?Probably not but if you're banking on innovation he's the way to go.

Conan O'Brien's Job

A recent article (in Entertainment Weekly I believe though I could be wrong) suggested that Jimmy Fallen might be poised to take over Late Night when Conan moves on to the Tonight Show. Now I've heard some bad ideas but this may be Iraq-like in it's red flags. Let's pretend that Mr. Fallen was funny on SNL during his tenure...

See how hard that is? How do you expect anyone to watch that instead of going to sleep or seeing what Craig Ferguson, Adult Swim, and Comedy Central are offering?
I have a couple of suggestions for who might make an amazing host:

The Longshot

When replacing David Letterman NBC and Lorne Michaels made the interesting choice of going for an unknown who could slag in the ratings for a little while trying to find his show's voice. My Longshot suggestion is pretty much the exact opposite. Take one of our most highly regaurded cultural figures with one of the most well defined comedic voices and make the 12:30am slot an event.

Dave Chappelle's TV come back could be glorious. NBC could use the cool points and the world could use Dave Chappelle.

Traditional Stand-up Worth Trying

Patton Oswald has something alot of comedians lack; stamina. I watched Patton Oswald drunkenly and yet expertly execute one of the finest stand up sets I've ever witnessed. He would probably turn out to be a swell (if somewhat smarmy) interviewer. I am also certain that his monologue would be the best on late night.

Sure you might be apprehensive to hand over your hosting duties to a man who looks like an extra from Lord of the Rings, but looks are barely a thing when it comes to late night TV.

The Buzz Candidate

Mtv may have already scooped up Aziz Ansari for his sketch show Human Giant, but who's to sat the illure of big network bucks and attention won't lure the uber hip superbly skileld stand-up and sketch comedian. What's more he has the hip crowd in the palm of his hands.

I have a few more theories of who could work well. Obviously Andy Richter having played the sidekick role get's the Hillary Clinton style boost, I'm sure there are writers at The Onion deserving of a shot at this sort of position, Eugene Mirman and Bobby Tisdail who've run their weekly Invite Them Up show for years proving themselves capable of the rigors of being funny over and over again, perhaps SNL would even offer some inspired choices(Amy Poeller, Fred Armisan, the terribly popular Andy Samberg).

Anyway the point is there's a couple hundred people better suited to this job than Jimmy Fallen. Please NBC take this all into account you have a long time to make a decision. As Homer Simpson once asked: "What are you laughing at? And if you say Jimmy Fallen I'll know your lying."
