I Believe The News Media Has Scared Me Quite Thoroughly, Thanks

So I awoke in a cold sweat after a nightmare last night. In this nightmare people were flying plains into the ground all over Staten Island. Not like two or three but several jet liners hiting people's houses and road ways and the like. I suppose this post-millenial paranoia is normal but it sure ain't pleasant.

To add to my nerves this morning while on the train and stopped at Canal St. I got a call on my cell phone from a strange number (402 572 7581 ring a bell?) and an automated voice said: "The area you are currently occupying is under an advisory. It is unsafe to be there and we recomend..." Train doors close and we role away. Maybe I've just snapped. I've repeatedly tried to recall the number but it's always busy.

I got a call from the same number. It's always busy when I try to call. Your blog is the only reference I can find to this number. Wierd.

Dude, that same number has been calling me all NIGHT but I haven't answered it. It leaves no message, and I have called it twice once it was busy, the second it just rang.

I just received a call at my home from this same number. And, since I did not recognize the number or caller ("West Interactiv..."), I let it ring. I googled the number and found this site.

Well, they did leave a message in my mailbox. The call was from Adelphia telling me that high-speed internet service has been restored in my area.

As a side note, here, I have been online via my Adelphia high-speed internet connection for over a couple of hours now. I am really relieved to hear that the service has been restored. But, it must have been restored at least a couple of hours ago.

I saw this number on my caller ID yesterday, but I don't have an answering machine so there was no message. I just got another call from that number, but nobody spoke. The strange thing is that I do have an appointment with Comcast cable tomorrow.

oh my goodness. I just googled this number, because I, too got a call (6:00 pm CA time), and didn't recognize it. I, too, have an appointment with Comcast tomorrow. So maybe that's it.

Yep, just got a call from the same number twice! I'm sure it's set up so that incoming calls always get a busy signal; it's some marketing company I'm sure. I wouldn't answer it if it's not a number you recognize, and I wouldn't worry about it either.

i missed a call from that number some time last night, no message. and just now (8/21/05) i got a call from that number again, but no response.

Hi! I had 4 missed calls from this number also...

Then I remember that yesterday our electricity went out and I called the Electric Company to report it. They had an automated service to report outtages. You could then leave a number for them to call you when power is restored. I put in my cell number. (which now makes no sense to me because I would obviously know when my power was restored "Lighybulb" LITERALLY) So I am assuming it was them, calling from type of call center.

I googled this same number and found your blog too. This number has called my cell phone three times so far, lol. I do have an appointment to have cable service turned on through Comcast Cable tomorrow. It must be their number, although some of the messages reported here are weird. I am in Northern California, and my caller ID says the call is coming from Nebraska. Weird.

Same story. I got repeated calls from this number, googled it, here I am. I have an appointment with Adelphia tomorrow. Interesting that Adelphia and Comcast have not merged yet and that most people are linking the number to Comcast.

Yet another ... have an appointment to get Adelphia on tomorrow, and three calls from this number today within 45 minutes of each other.

Most likely it's this company making the call for your cable company. Most likely Adelphia or Comcast did want to have to buy an automated call system and hired West to do it for them.

Yup, Got the same number 2 times already, yesterday and this morning. I'snt that area code from Nebraska? I also have an appointment this saturday for comcast, getting my Internet put in. It must be tied in with that, i mean this has got to confirm it right?

I just googled the number and found your blog...this number has been harassing me all night, too! I finally called *69 to see who it was...but it was busy. I just paid my adelphia bill, too...so maybe that's why nobody's been there to say anything when I answer?

I received a call from this number this morning. My power went out earlier this morning, and it was a message from FPL saying that they are currently working to restore power in the area. This is a message service that contracts with several companies to make automated calls for them.

Those tools at Comcast! I just got a call from this number and nobody was there- just dead air. While staying on the line, I googled it and found this post. After a full 25 seconds of dead air, the Comcast recording confirmed my appointment for the 21st. Man, who is in charge of their automated system? Amazing...

I got that call and it was from Levitz. They were confirming delivery of my furniture. I gave Levitz my cell number as contact. That number calls people to confirm appointments. That is weird about the advisory thing though.

I'm pretty sure the number is just some call-back service hired by various companies. Duke Power must have hired it to respond to my "1800POWERON" report of a power failure. They typically call about an hour after they think they have restored to electric service to my residence. The call is just to be sure that power was restored. If not, they would send out new people.

I'm sure duke power is just one of many companies that use the 402-572-7581 call-back service. I'd be concerned, however, if the emergency management centers for cell-phone subscribers use this number for emergency proximity evacuation notifications as at least one person posted (while on a train apparently). One might get used to simply not answering calls from this number if it becomes a nusiance.

I work for Comcast and that # is from a small, third-party call center that a lot of companies will outsource outbound calling to. We use it to confirm appointments (this is done nation-wide so it is not uncommon to see an out of state return number) and inform customers that an outage has cleared. and such. Hope that helps, if even just a little

I've been getting calls from this number too, but since they never left messages, never bothered to call back, this is like 4 months now so I called it back and a man picked up speaking spanish, so I answered him back since I do know the language and he said this number is being monitored 24/7 and that everyone calls it all the time... that it cannot have calls going out and that someone must be messing with the lines... the man lives around my area! (818) area code... do you guys live around here too? I googled this number and found this site... when I googled where the area code belonged to, it says its from NEBRASKA?! what is this?!?!?!

Crazy, they called me too and I am in the 818 area code.

They're calling my cell phone though and I don't feel like talking to anyone so now I know I can just let it ring.

I'm in Boston, MA and missed a few calls from this number 402-572-7581 (today, Feb. 15th). I googled it to see who it was since no message was left and came here.... while I was doing so I received a call from the same number and answered it. It was an automated Comcast message telling me that I had an appointment for tomorrow, 5-7 PM (which I do).

Hello All,

Just a note - I was told a while back that when you set up a PBX system, like most small or even larger companies have today, you can enter whatever caller ID information you want to have appear during the out going call (such as the number or name the number belongs to). I heard this as the person telling the story explained they set up their system to look like the White House was calling and would then harass their friends. I also know, just like some internet addresses are reserved and not available for use on the internet, that the phone company reserves certain numbers for testing, future uses, etc. Perhaps this is one of those numbers that doesn't really connect anywhere that call centers and/or auto dialers report on outgoing calls to ensure they do not receive incomming calls. Thus someone annoyed by the auto dialer can't call the number back and tie up the line the system uses? That would be my theory...

It's also interesting to see so many other people screen and google their calls. We're all so naughty! ;)

Hey all. I got two calls this morning from this number. The second one I answered, and all I got was silence. I hung up after about 10 seconds, though. I, too, am having Adelphia come to my home for an install tomorrow. I'm up in Maine, on the New Brunswick, Canada line. I googled the # and got Nebraska as well. I guess I have nothing new to add for you all, just rambling.......

I got 14 calls from them in 1 day, i'm in 860 area code, I called 411 they told me it was nebraska but couldn't give me a name, right after they called me, all of the wires and cables on the side of my house were disconnected ( the one's in the locked boxes!!!) I called comcast and they told me to call the police, so I did. I've tried calling the number back on a few occasions (I'm nosy and curious) and i always go a busy signal unless it was after like 5 pm and then it would just ring and ring and ring, no answering machine no answering service nothing, I googled the number and found a handfull of websites regarding this phone number. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one being annoyed by these inconsiderate fools.

My call from that number was from FPL to say that the power outage had been restored in my area. This was in response to my reporting it to an 800 number.

402 is certainly not in my area.

As already noted, this number is from a third party call center contracted to make announcements and appointment confirmations for dozens of companies. I have recieved 4 calls this afternoon from this number. On the last call, they finally left a message. It was from our county government advising us that effective immediately, there is a total outdoor water ban in our area.

6:50 yeah, I got the same call... Actually I have been getting calls from it for weeks. It was starting to freak me out until I googled the number and saw your blog. I have an appt. with Comcast tomorrow. How weird. Why Nebraska??? Funny how the times keep comeing up around the same. Also odd, whenever it calls it will only go for ONE ring, and even if I answer right away, the line is ALWAYS dead. The number is busy constantly. Wtf??

This must be some sort of message service number for businesses to use. We had a power outage today and I called to report it to Fla. Power & Light. This is the number that call me back with an automated message about the outage and to update on how long it would take to be restored.

I too got a call from this number today but missed it, so I googled it to figure out if it was a scam call. It sounds like it's a pretty primitive automated system that isn't capable of leaving a message and it also sounds like it's broken half the time, with huge silences preceding the first prompt. In any case, nothing sinister. I only have a plumber's appointment tomorrow, though, and it seems unlikely they'd use a service like this!
